The Goal:

To enhance and expand the knowledge of our current spaniel field trial judges.

The Process:

  1. Open discussion on past judging scenarios we have witnessed at trials.

  1. Firsthand experience on a set of 12-15 dogs “entered” in a mock trial.

The Format:

Arrive Friday, July 21 by noon for lunch then start discussion format on past judging scenarios.

These scenarios will come from situations the panel has judged, witnessed, or participated in.

There will also be time allowed for the attendees to bring up a situation they have judged and want acknowledgement of right or wrong or why.

The following 10 situations will be discussed as a starting point:

  1. Dog sent on a long sailed out retrieve – dog comes up short circles back ¼ way back to the handler – sits down, waiting for handler discussion: handler gives right hand back and dog buttons retrieve.
    1. Short mark
    2. Gave up looking.
    3. Handled perfectly back to fall.
  2. Throw out of an honor dog that brace bird was dropped close to dog.
  3. Water retrieve at a national– failed to enter initially – after much coaxing dog makes retrieve – does it place, drop down, no placement?
  4. When to call a passed bird
  5. Discuss actual examples of hopper birds and your call on each.
  6. Trail out a runner and doesn’t produce that runner.
  7. When to call interference
  8. Dog returning to handler with a trap, spots another bird and goes after that, losing the initial bird, gunner shoots the flushed bird and dog retrieves that one and initial bird runs away.
  9. Short shot birds, dog breaks
  10. Two shot birds that your dog flushed.

Mock Field Trial:

Firsthand experience on a set of 12-15 dogs in a mock field trial

Divide the participants into two groups of judges and watch/judge first series.

Discuss what type of notes to take.

First series – discuss call backs for 2nd series.

Second series – open discussion on 3rd series call back.

In – Out – Maybe Piles

List reason or reasons why a dog was not called back.

Make sure you account for all dogs entered

Disclaimers:

Northern Minnesota English Springer Spaniel Club and Pine Shadows is offering this educational seminar for current spaniel field trial judges.

It is our hope that many of the current judges will attend this type of format to enhance each person’s level of competency and assure future judging assignments go smooth and you as a judge are able to communicate your placements and decisions

This seminar is not intended to criticize a past judging decision that someone has made.

This seminar will be videotaped in its entirety.
