Eugene L. “Gene” Johnson M.D. 1928-2005

Sadly, a familiar figure in the Spaniel world passed away at his home on Friday, April 22nd. For those of you who did not know him, "Geno" was one of the truly "good guys" in our sport. In addition to being an avid field trialer, he was responsible for founding the English Springer Spaniel Club of Eastern Iowa.

Dear Family and Friends,

As many of you may know, we lost our father, Eugene Johnson, last Friday morning, April 22nd. He will now rest forever with his Holy Father.

The visitation will be Tuesday, April 26, from 4-8pm at Cunnick-Collins Funeral Home, 1200 East 39th St., Davenport, IA, 52807. The phone number is (563) 391-1200. (Click here for a map).

Two funeral services will be held. There will be a viewing an hour before each. The first funeral service, in Bettendorf, IA, at 10am on Wednesday, April 27 at Our Savior Lutheran Church. Following the funeral service on Thursday, will be the internment at Dalander's Cemetary.

Obiturary from the Quad-City Times

Eugene L. "Gene" Johnson M.D., 76, of LeClaire, Iowa, died peacefully at his home on Friday, April 22, 2005.

A celebration of life service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 27, at Our Savior Lutheran Church, in Bettendorf, with additional services being held at 1 p.m. on Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Madrid, Iowa. Burial and graveside services will follow at the Dalander Cemetery in rural Madrid. The family will greet friends on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Cunnick-Collins Mortuary in Davenport, and additionally for an hour prior to both church services at the church.
Eugene LeRoy Johnson was born on August 14, 1928, to Millard and Pearl (Olson) Johnson in Madrid. During World War II, he served in the United States Army in the Pacific Theater. On August 14, 1954, he married Marguerite Robinson in Clinton, Iowa.

Dr. Johnson was a conservationist, lover of the outdoors, avid sportsman, and founder of the English Springer Spaniel Club of Eastern Iowa. He graduated with a BS Degree from Augustana College in Rock Island, and with an M.D. Degree from the University of Iowa. He was in the general practice of medicine in Spirit Lake, Iowa, for 10 years. In November of 1967, he started his residency of radiology in Davenport, where he practiced until his retirement on July 1, 1992.

He served as an alternate delegate and as a delegate to the AMA and to the Iowa Medical Society. He served as president of the Dickinson County Medical Society, the Scott County Medical Society, and the Iowa Radiology Society, as well as the Chief of Staff at the Dickinson County Hospital and former St. Luke's Hospital in Davenport. He became a diplomat of the American Board of Family Practice in 1970 and a diplomat of the American Board of Radiology on December 10, 1971. He was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Radiology on September 29, 1987. Among his many and varied memberships, he was also an active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bettendorf.

Eugene devoted his life to serving the Lord, his family, and his community. He was a loving husband to Marguerite Johnson, and a loving father to Deborah Harwood, of Vancouver, Wash., Douglas Johnson ,of Omaha, Neb., and Christine Rees, of Magnolia, Texas. He was a loving grandfather to Kristin Harwood, Connor Harwood, Nicole Johnson, Ryan Johnson, Lindsay Johnson, Tyler Johnson, and Michael Rees. He was also a loving brother to Arlene Hansen, of Walnut, Iowa.

Eugene touched many lives and never knew a stranger. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. Memorials may be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church or to the Quad-City Symphony.
